Platelet Rich Fibrin, or PRF, is an effective treatment in dentistry that uses your own blood to accelerate post-procedure healing.
Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is used in dental surgery as a biomaterial to promote healing and tissue regeneration.
PRF is used in cases of:
Is PRF safe?
Yes. During the surgical appointment a small amount of your blood is drawn. This blood is then placed in the PRF centrifuge machine. In less than 15 minutes, the PRF is formed and ready to use.
Should PRF be used in all bone-grafting cases?
Not always. In some cases, there is no need for PRF. However, in the majority of cases, application of PRF to the graft will increase your bone amount, in addition to making the wound heal faster and more efficiently.
Will my insurance cover the cost?
Unfortunately not. The cost of the PRF application (approximately $700) is paid by the patient. Often, PRF is part of grafting treatment.
Can PRF be used alone to stimulate bone formation?
Yes. Most of the time though, PRF will be mixed with either the patient’s own bone or a bone substitute material such as demineralized freeze-dried bone.
Are there any contraindications to PRF?
Very few. Obviously, patients with bleeding disorders do not qualify for this in-office procedure. Check with us to determine if PRF is right for you.
